The Outlook MCP server connects an agent to Microsoft 365 mail and calendar through the Graph API. For anyone whose working life runs through Outlook rather than Gmail, this is the equivalent integration, with the additional complication that corporate tenants tend to have opinions about it.

What it actually does

The server authenticates through OAuth against Microsoft Graph and exposes mailbox and calendar operations. The agent can search and read email, read calendar events and availability, and with broader scopes draft, send or create events. Search is the capability that carries most of the value, because Outlook’s own search is not good at the questions people actually have.

Practical patterns:

  • ‘Find the thread where we agreed the delivery date on this project.’
  • ‘What does my week look like, and where are the genuinely free two-hour blocks?’
  • ‘Summarise everything unread from this client since Monday.‘

Why use it

Email is the archive of every decision nobody wrote down anywhere else. The commitment, the caveat, the date that was agreed in passing. Finding those with keyword search is unreliable because you are searching for a meaning rather than a phrase, and an agent that can read results and judge relevance is far better at it than a search box.

Gotchas

Tenant admin consent is the usual blocker and it is organisational rather than technical. Many Microsoft 365 tenants require an administrator to approve an application before it can read mail, so a personal account may work while your work account refuses with an unhelpful error. The Graph scopes involved grant access to the whole mailbox rather than a folder, so understand what you are consenting to. And email content flowing to an AI provider is a data question your employer may already have a policy on.

Outlook MCP server: FAQs

Why will it not connect on my work account?

Most likely tenant policy. Corporate Microsoft 365 tenants usually require admin consent before an application can read mail, and that is an approval rather than a setting you can flip.

Can it send email?

With the right Graph scope, yes. Draft-only is the safer configuration for anything client-facing.

Does it cover Teams?

No. This is mail and calendar. Teams is a separate part of Graph and generally a separate server.

What scopes does it need?

Mail and Calendars scopes, read-only if you only need to query. These grant access across the mailbox, not a folder, so treat them seriously.
