“Ahrefs MCP is free” is technically true and practically misleading. The server costs nothing extra. It is included on paid Ahrefs plans, and those start at $129 a month.
So the real comparison is $35 standalone against $129 with an MCP attached.
What the $94 gap is actually buying
If you already pay for Ahrefs, their MCP is included and the index behind it is the deepest in the category. What it does not carry is page audits, your Search Console data or a record of what you found, which is the next section.
The question is for everyone else, the people considering a $129 plan mainly so their agent can do SEO research. That is a lot of dashboard you will not open.
ContextBolt is built the other way round. The agent is where the research happens, and the SEO Dashboard is where the answers land afterwards rather than somewhere you have to go and work. $35 a month gets you keyword and SERP research, competitors, backlink overview and gaps, page audits, and AI visibility research, with a Search Console connection thrown in free.
Three things Ahrefs MCP does not carry
Page audits: Ahrefs Site Audit lives in the dashboard, not the MCP, so your agent cannot run one. ContextBolt audits on demand, up to 50 pages a run, and the agent can read the findings and fix them.
Your own Search Console data: Not part of Ahrefs MCP. ContextBolt connects it read-only in a click, with daily snapshots, so your real queries sit alongside the estimates without a Cloud project or a service account.
A record: Ahrefs MCP answers into the chat and that is where the answer stays. ContextBolt saves every successful lookup to your SEO Dashboard automatically, so a fortnight later you can browse and filter what you found instead of scrolling a conversation.
Where Ahrefs MCP still fits
The index is Ahrefs’ job. DR, UR, and the deepest backlink index in the category, and if your process quotes those numbers or a client expects them, that dependency is worth keeping. Brand Radar is reachable through the MCP as well, with Brand Radar AI a separate subscription, and the server is listed in ChatGPT’s app directory, which makes it a click there.
That is a different job from the one most people considering a $129 plan for agent research have, which is getting keyword, SERP and competitor answers next to their own Search Console data, auditing the page, and keeping a record of what they found. If you already pay for Ahrefs, run both. If you do not, start with the $35 and see whether you ever miss the index.
Credits and API units are not the same thing
Do not try to match the allowances. ContextBolt gives you 1,000 credits a month and different tools cost different amounts. Ahrefs uses API units and row caps, which measure something else entirely.
Price a representative task instead. The Ahrefs MCP pricing guide breaks down what the caps really allow, and the SEO tool pricing guide does the same across the market.
Try it on one page
Connect it to Claude, Cursor or Codex, connect Search Console, and ask why a page underperforms.
Twenty minutes will tell you whether you need the $129 plan behind the other one. Start the 7-day trial with 100 credits. A card is required, and it becomes $35 a month unless you cancel before the trial ends.
