Semrush MCP does not cost anything. It comes with the plan. The plan is the expensive part, and which plan is the bit people get wrong.
For a new account, MCP access means Semrush One Starter at $199 a month. Not the $139 SEO plan, which is the one most comparisons quote. The current docs list One Starter and Pro+, plus legacy Classic Pro and Guru, each with 50,000 API units per renewal. One Advanced and Classic Business need an extra units package on top.
ContextBolt SEO is $35 a month, standalone, with the agent connection as the product rather than a perk.
Check what you already have first
If you already pay for Semrush, look at your entitlement first, because legacy accounts differ from the new tiers. If MCP is included, you already have an agent connection to the Semrush index. What it does not carry is site audits, your Search Console data or a record of what you found, which is the part of this page that still applies to you.
The comparison that matters is for someone deciding now, mostly because they want SEO research inside Claude or Codex. Paying $199 a month for that is a lot, and most of what you get for it is a suite you will not open.
What $35 covers
Keyword research, difficulty and SERPs. Domain and competitor analysis. Backlink overview, referring domains and competitor gaps. Page audits on demand, up to 50 pages a run. AI visibility research, historical across Google AI and ChatGPT with live per-question checks in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.
Plus a Search Console connection, read-only, one click, free, with daily snapshots. So your actual Google performance sits next to the estimates in the same conversation.
What the MCP surface does not carry
Site audits: Semrush’s crawler lives in the suite, not the MCP. Your agent cannot run one through it. ContextBolt’s audits run on demand and the agent can read the findings and draft the fixes without leaving the chat.
A record of what you found: Semrush MCP answers into the conversation. ContextBolt saves every successful lookup to your SEO Dashboard automatically, so you can browse and filter it a fortnight later instead of hunting through chat history.
Your own Google data: The MCP reads the Semrush index, not your Search Console. ContextBolt connects Search Console read-only in one click and takes daily snapshots, so your real clicks and impressions are in the chat rather than a model’s guess at them.
Where Semrush MCP still fits
The database. It is deep, it is first-party, and its metrics are what a lot of client reporting is built on. If a client expects Semrush figures, or you use the wider suite, PPC research and all, the MCP is the way to bring that index into your agent.
That is a reporting dependency, and it is not what most people buying an agent connection from scratch have. ContextBolt runs on Ahrefs-grade DataForSEO data, sound in direction for choosing what to publish and what to fix, and adds the audits, Search Console data and SEO Dashboard the Semrush surface does not carry, for $35 rather than $199.
Do not match the allowances
50,000 API units and 1,000 credits are not the same unit and cannot be converted. Price a task you actually run, in both, and compare that.
The Semrush MCP pricing guide works through which plans qualify and what the units really buy. The SEO tool pricing guide does the same across the category.
Try it on one page
Connect it to your agent, connect Search Console, and ask why a page is underperforming.
If that gets you to a change worth publishing, you have your answer about the $199. Start the 7-day trial with 100 credits. A card is required, and it becomes $35 a month unless you cancel before the trial ends.
