The hard part of blogging is not writing. It is that most of what you write never gets read, and you find out three months later.
The posts that fail usually failed at the idea. They were aimed at a term owned by sites you cannot out-link, and no amount of effort in the draft was going to change that.
One question before the first sentence
“How hard is it to rank for this, and does anyone search it?”
That is the whole discipline. Ask it before the draft rather than after, and the hit rate changes. A difficulty score and a monthly volume take one lookup, and the answer either sends you to the keyboard or saves you a day.
There is more on reading the number in keyword difficulty without Ahrefs.
The SERP tells you more than the score
Two terms with the same difficulty can be completely different fights. Ask what actually ranks.
Ten pages from established brands means the door is shut. A couple of forum threads, an outdated post from 2019 and one thin listicle means it is wide open, whatever the score said. SERP analysis with Claude covers what to look for.
Steal the map, not the posts
The blogs beating you have already done the research. Ask your agent what a competing domain ranks for and you get their terms back, sorted.
You are not looking for posts to copy. You are looking for the gaps, the terms they rank for where their post is weak, and terms in the same cluster nobody has covered properly.
Your own numbers are free
Connect Google Search Console and ask which of your posts get impressions and almost no clicks. That is a list of posts already ranking somewhere on page one or two, usually a title away from being clicked.
It costs no credits and it is almost always the highest-return work on a content site.
The research stops evaporating
The lookups fill your SEO Dashboard, a private page you can open when you would rather see the whole plan than one keyword at a time.
Ask about the same term next month and the answer leads with what moved. That is the part a spreadsheet never does, and it is why the list is still useful in six months.
